Proverbs 31 begins with "the words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him". This chapter presents the counsel of a queen mother to her son, King Lemuel, offering guidance on righteous leadership and, famously, describing the characteristics of a virtuous woman. The initial verses warn against misusing power through indulgence in wine and women, emphasizing the importance of a ruler's clear judgment to defend the poor and needy. The latter part of the chapter, often seen as an acrostic poem, then elaborates on the exemplary traits of a capable and God-fearing woman, whose value is "far above rubies". While it outlines an ideal for women, many of these qualities, such as diligence, wisdom, charity, and strength, are applicable to all disciples of Christ.
