Historical and Narrative Context:
This powerful passage is part of Alma's teachings to the people in the city of Gideon. Unlike the people of Zarahemla, whom Alma had previously taught and found in need of repentance, the people of Gideon were largely living righteously. Because of their faithfulness, Alma was able to share with them "one thing which is of more importance" than all others: the coming of Jesus Christ and His atoning sacrifice. Alma prophesied that the Savior would experience "pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind" so that He could personally know "according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities". This emphasizes that Christ's knowledge extends beyond divine omniscience; it includes a profound, experiential understanding of our mortal challenges and sufferings.
