The king, enraged by Haman's treachery, orders his immediate execution on the very gallows Haman had prepared for Mordecai. Following Haman's death, Esther further pleads with the king to reverse the decree that Haman had previously issued for the annihilation of the Jews. Since a king's decree could not be revoked, the king instead authorized Esther and Mordecai to issue a new decree empowering the Jews to defend themselves against any who would attack them.
