Following their return from Babylonian captivity, the Israelites in Jerusalem had been spiritually adrift, largely without consistent access to the scriptures for many years. With the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls under Nehemiah's leadership nearing completion, the people gathered in unified purpose. It was in this setting that Ezra, the priest and scribe, was asked to bring forth the book of the law of Moses and read it to the congregation. The Levites assisted, helping the people understand the meaning of the scriptures, leading to a powerful experience of spiritual awakening and renewal for the covenant people.
